The idea has now been running around in my head for a few weeks. I was talking at the club to people, about wanting to get back into Warhammer Fantasy. With the new edition seeming to get rid of a lot of the silly rules, and generally looking more enjoyable, I felt I wanted to give it another go.

I had already decided I wanted to field a themed list, as this tends to be more fun and less competitive, and it had too have lots of monsters, and was berating the fact that I had got rid of my Beastmen, when Andy Dodd mentioned about trying Skaven. The prospect of doing a clan list was too much to resist (and the fact that there are loads of cheap models in the Island of Blood boxed set) and so I set about perusing the army book for units that could feasibly be fielded as Clan Moulder.

A couple of list revisions later, and I am currently at the one below. I have been putting a lot of thought into the background and have written a story that will be the basis for the army. This story is too long to post here, so here is a link to download it. http://www.mediafire.com/?9ss0ra3f8fke8s3

In a nutshell, Warlord Skwirm is incompetent, but things seem to work out for him. Emfur, his chieftain and banner bearer, is sick of having his life put at risk, and wants Skwirm dead, while the Grey Seer Chit (represented in the game as a Plague Priest as he is a young Grey Seer) has been sent by the Grey Seer council to find out what has been happening with Skwirm and whether he should be removed from his command.

Planning and Building

So, how I intend to build and paint the different units.

Having seen Gareth's army recently, his rats look like a tide of vermin, and I feel this is how they should look, so I shall be painting mine mostly grey and brown, with touches of red.

Skwirm, my Warlord, will be built from the IoB warlord. As I am getting two of these, I can build one on foot, and one on his Bonebreaker. For the Bonenreaker, I shall use one of the Rat Ogres that are dragging their knuckles, and build a wooden cab on top of it.

Emfur, my Battle Standard, will be built using bits from the Stormvermin boxed set, and will probably have the Doomwheel Banner, as it is nice and big.

Chit, the Grey Seer, will be built from Plague Monk bits. The Pox Rat will be from the Caller from Necromunda, which is a big undead rat. I am considering having a chinese style cab (think Hong Kong Phooey's car). I think he may even have a chauffeur.

The Clan Rats will be built using the IoB Clanrats and normal boxed rats. No real conversions here, although I am still thinking about unit fillers. The Doomflayers will be built by putting Rat Ogres on cavalry bases, and substituting their arms for whirling blades.

The slaves will have the more grimier clanrat models, and I will throw some zombie bis into the mix, too try and create a malnourished look. May also have some Packmasters on Rat Ogres (or maybe Enslaved Ogres) as unit fillers.

The Giant Rats will be mostly straight from the box, but I would like to add some Throtlings, Rat Ogres hands, etc.

The same goes for the Rat Swarms.

The Rat Ogres will of course use IoB and normal boxed sets. I will try to build four Rat Ogres from three models. I am going to scratch build a quarter of each Rat Ogre to make them look more cybernetic. Some of these will have cabs on their backs to carry the Packmasters.

I was going to build the Abominations from Raveners, but I feel they may be too small, so I shall try to pick up some of the High Elf Dragon bodies and Mawloc heads, and work them up from there. I also feel they would benefit from some smaller Nid claws and arms along his body.

I need a number of other things. I need to organise some Skaven dice, I need to steal my pewter Skaven key ring back off the wife, and get the new magic decks when they are released.

Despite the lack of recent progress, I have been doing some painting, having finished another 5 Clanrats, and half way through another 5 and another Rat Ogre, but this is a piccy of my first Rat Ogre.

Work is also progressing on my tribute model for the club campaign.
