Diary of an army 2 Skaven
Well,

I've just put together and am about to spray my border patrol. This will also form the start of my 2000 point skaven army.

The list is as follows.

Warlock Engineer with Storm Deamon 110 points with all his gubbins
25 Clanrats, full command, with a warpfire thrower. (More chance of blowing up that a ratling gun, so that is my preferred choice) 225 points
20 Clanrat Slaves 40 points
5 Night runners with add wpns 35 points
3 Packs of Giant rats. 90 points

(Is 73 models enough for a border patrol?!)

The army is going for a crimson effect, and will be the Horde of the Crimson Claw (or something like that)
I quite liked the underground effects in the last White Dwarf. (The goblins vrs dwarf game) I want to do bases that would fit that theme.

I still need some names for my characters, although I may play a few times before they 'earn' their names.

The final army hopes to be something like this:
Please shout up if you see anything that might want changing!

Grey Seer with some toys
Plague Priest with add wpn and bands of power
Assassin with stars
Warlock Engineer with Storm deamon

2 units of clanrats (1 fire thrower, 1 rattling gun)
2 units of slaves
4 Giant rat packs
2 Rat Ogres
6 Night runners
24 Plague Monks with banner of burning hatred
6 Censor Bearers
4 Wind Globerdiers
1 Warp Lightning Cannon

The only real loss is no Jezzails.
When I buy some, I may replace the rat ogres.

Cheers,

Pete

Re: Diary of an army 2 Skaven
How about this for a pretty evil doubles Skaven army.
Force 1
Warlock, full gear except pistol, Storm deamon 110
Warlock full gear except pistol 85
20 Clanrats FC 125
Ratling 60
20 slaves 40
5 Gutter runners, tunnel team, poison 85 (or 5 PCBs at same cost)
5 Night runners, extra weapons
20 Plague Monks extra weapons FC, Banner of BH 210
Total 750

Force 2
Warlock Full gear except pistol Eye O H rat 110
22 Clanrats FC 135
Ratling 60
20 Slaves 40
7 Jezzails 140
20 Clanrats, spears FC 150
WFT 75
20 Slaves 40
Total 750

(Probably) 9 casting dice, 5 dispel dice
166 models in 1500!

Leadership the only real weakness.

If you and Anna want to go double skaven and need the models I should have what you need.

That is a very nasty list, and thanks for the offer.

However, if Anna and I have not finished painting the Skaven/Goblin alliance, we'll go with Empire/High Elves instead.

At least then we'll have painted them ourselves (of course not to your standard) and that is part of the fun of the hobby too.

Re: Diary of an army 2 Skaven
A wise choice I think.
I have noticed that there are a possible 7000 points available for sportsmanship votes.
(New scoring system based on the WPS one)
1000 points for each best game vote you get. This will make a big difference so perhaps it might not be so wise to go magic/shooty heavy as these sort of armies are not so fun to play against.

I have finished painting the night runners, and have given the giant rat packs their first dry brushing of graveyard earth brown.

Not that anyone is interested, but it is a record and you can all see just how long it takes to paint an army.

So far, about 4 hours. (And yes, only 5 models done)

Well, after 5 and a half hours worth of painting today, the giant rat pack is done. 21 models.
This bring the totals up to nearly 10 hours and 26 models.
But giant rats are very quick to paint.

Re: Diary of an army 2 Skaven
At three hours a model it would take me about 220 hours to paint my border patrol!

My actual skaven models have taken about 45 minutes each, which is quite slow for me! I used to be able to do a unit of 10 in a 1 and half hours.

Re: Diary of an army 2 Skaven
From a deep loathing of playing with unpainted models (anyone noticed that?).
From a great sense of satisfaction at managing to improve my painting every time I paint an army.
But generally, my motivation comes from love of the whole hobby. A new army means new painting methods, new army books to read and background to write. New games to play, with different strategies to have a go at.
Good stress relief too.
If you don't love seeing a unit that you have painted, I don't think you can spend that much time painting. But I have spent some of the time I allocated today just admiring yesterday's painting! Sad but true! Didn't get round to painting the 4 slaves I had earmarked for today at all. I could start now, but I think they'll take about 3 hours, and I'm tired!

Having a deadline also helps. I have the Sheffield doubles in May to paint my border patrol, then 750 points for the Warhammer Doubles. I'd like to take 2000 points into the field before the end of August, then spend the rest of the year painting army options, bringing it to about 3000 points by Christmas, just in time to start buying a new army!

40 points
20 Slaves
40 points
3 Giant Rat Packs

Gosh, about 6 hours of painting and I have managed ...

5 clanrats!

For some reason they are taking a lot longer than the slaves. Probably the toning on the armour is more complex, and there are shields and standards to consider too.

Still, well on track to get the border patrol done before the end of the Easter holidays.

After losing all 6 practice games, Anna and I took the skaven/gobbo army to the doubles at club tiger this weekend and won 3 out of 4 games, finishing 7th.

Some foolish people even voted for it as best painted (although it really wasn't at all!)

Gareth and Andy T finshed 5th with 3 out of 4, but bigger wins and a lesser defeat.

The whole 2,000 points is now assembled and sprayed.

And after the club challenge I can get back on my painting table and get the rats painted! (Anna has been frantically painting her Orcs and Goblins for the club challenge, they look quite good)

Target is to get another unit (at least) painted by the end of half term.

But I have found a name for my Grey Seer.

Periculous Muris

Re: Diary of an army 2 Skaven
Well, most of you will have seen how my army is getting along on Thursday. (And the fact the Horned Rat has blessed my dice.)

I had finshed a unit of slaves in time for the game with Gareth, I am now painting my unit of spear weilding clanrats. 2 done today.

Also, I have revised my list.

Periculosus Muris. Grey Seer with Twisted Crown of the Horned Rat, Eye of the horned rat and a dispel scroll.

Patronus Rattus. Plague Priest with additional hand weapon and liber bubonicus. (The level 1 so extra dispel dice will should work better than trying to get them bands of power to work.)

Ferox Eekrah. Warlock Engineer with super charged warp power accumulator, upgraded warp energy condensor, warp baldes, storm daemon and dispel scroll.

Bakkus. Battle Standard Bearer with heavy armour. War Banner. (Yep, much better than the assassin)

25 clan rats, musician and standard with Warp Fire Thrower. (They're fun!)
24 clan rats with spears, standard and musician with Rattling gun.
3 Giant rat packs (dropped from 4 to save a few points)
5 Night runners with additional hand weapon
5 Night runners with additional hand weapon
5 Jezzials (instead of the Rat Ogres, 2 is not viable really, and no points for more as the unit is more an indulgence)
24 Plague Monks with musician and banner of burning hatred
6 Plague Censor Bearers
20 Slaves with musician
20 Slaves with musician
1 Warp Lightning Cannon
4 tunneling gutterrunners (better than skitterleaping the assassin)
3 Poison Wind Globerdiers

Of course since I do not yet own the 5 jezzails and 4 gutter runners, the old list will be fielded for now.

Next opponent, Tim Hunter.

Pete

Painting report!

Finished 750 points (about 120 models) ready for the Warhammer doubles.

It really helps to have a target date, otherwise I don't think the last unit would be done for at least another couple of weeks.

Now, I hope to have the Plague Monks finished before the start of the school summer holidays. (5 weeks - 5 a week)

And the list has been changed again! Back in with the assassin, out with the plague priest.

You didn't put the result of our game down pete

I am very dissappointed and a bit sad to be honest

I must say that the game did go ever so slightly in my favour (mainly due to the whirling axes of death and a mortar) but that is not to say that the result is in any way tarnished

I think your Warlock engineer running off in the 1st turn is what won me the game pete (along with my brilliant generalship  or something like that)

I look forward to playing the revised list when you have got used to the army so you can whup me in return

Re: Diary of an army 2 Skaven
My army lost horribly to Tim's Empire. The Axe Hewer and Mortar really hurting my big infantry blocks.

Still, it taught me something about my army, and it exposed a few mistakes that I shall endeavor not to repeat. So it's all good.

Next game shall be the week after next, opponent to be confirmed!

However, on the painting front I failed to factor in writing 40 school reports into my free time (ie I have no free time) so they may need to wait until the summer holiday blitz.

Re: Diary of an army 2 Skaven
So with 15 Plague monks of the unit so far, but my purchases from the trip to Lenton on campaign weekend assembled and based, it is time for a list revision. This is what I will be playing against Gareth on Thursday.

Periculosus Muris Grey Seer with Eye of the horned rat and dispel scroll
Assassin with add weapon and warpstone stars
Warlock Engineer with storm daemon
Battle Standard with warbanner and heavy armour

(In true skaven style none of these characters actually want to be in close combat, even the assassin!)

25 Clanrats with warpfire thrower, standard and musician
24 Clanrat spears with ratling gun, standard and musician
4 Giant rat packs
25 Plague Monks additional hand weapon and full command
5 Plague Censor Bearers
21 Slaves with musician
21 Slaves with musician
5 Night runners with additional hand weapon
5 Night runners with additional hand weapon
1 Warp Lighning Cannon
4 Poisoned Wind Globerdiers
5 Gutterrunner tunnel team with poisoned additional hand weapons
5 Jezzails

Re: Diary of an army 2 Skaven
Well, it was a glorious victory for the skaven.

Andy did struggle due to the large number of 'counts as magical' attacks the skaven have, which really hurt his tree spirits, but on the other hand his 4 Tree Kin, which really worried me, did not get themselves involved in the game. A little too cautious with that unit Andy, they should have run straight down the middle.

My ratling gun was very lucky, wiping out a whole unit of dryads with one burst of 'counts as magical' fire. And Andy's Altar Kindred found out why it is a bad idea to stand on your own close to a warp lighning cannon.

Luck was not all my way though. After IF13 on a 2D6 warp lighning at wardancers, I rolled double 1 for hits, doing 2S5 hits on my Grey Seer. (Luckily only 1 wounded) A later wound from a warp stone chunk gave Andy half his points.

The warbanner was, again, useless. But I am now strongly considering the Umbanner. In every game, the grey seers unit is tagetted with lots of shooting to make it panic. When it does panic I lose the game. The Umbanner would help prevent this.

On the painting side, after a very preductive week, only the BSB to go for the 2,000 points. Then onto 2 Rat Ogres and a unit of 25 Storm Vermin.

Cheers,

Pete

4 hours of painting today.

I have completed one model. My Battle Standard Bearer.

But it does look ver nice, if I do say so myself.

Thanks Gareth for the help converting it.

2,000 points done.

2 Rat Ogres, then a couple of Kiddy K Chaos models, then Games Day Terrain, 24 Stormvermin, 1 ratling gun. Then done until after Christmas.

So looking back I started on March 25th, I have taken about 4 months and 1 week to paint 2,000 points.

Cheers,

Pete

Nicely done Pete, i must say i like this idea of the painting an army and write about each individual experience with it.

Perhaps it could be made into a article to be put into the scrapbook or something that could help other people wishing to start Skaven in the near future.

& if you had some pictures as time passed by even better, but if you didn't no worries, this is a very nice thread by the way.
