Five go mad in Lincoln
Setting off at 6:15 am on a slightly overcast Saturday, the feeling of a
grand adventure stole over me. I nipped up the road to pick up Steve and Mike. With banter
running high we made our way to Cheltenham to get the rest of the team, Gareth and Chris.
As the general ribaldry in the car rose 40%, we headed for the M5 and our appointment with
destiny. There was some comment that you should stop at red traffic lights but opinion was
divided!
Arriving in Lincoln at around 9:15 am, it took me some time to locate the Gobstyks meeting
cave but through diligence, perseverance and a little old lady who knew the way, we found
it. The hall was light and large and the tables were in place. The atmosphere was one of
tense expectancy as we all signed in. Some gallant warriors from Scunthorpe had also made
the journey and the scene was set for a day of wargaming. Without further ado, the first
draw was made.
My arch nemesis Kelly Hill had grudged me for the first game and proceeded to deploy a
rather colorful Lizardman army. Her artistic bent was in evidence as pink, yellow and
green lizards took up positions upon the table. The noble Bretonnians, fearing naught,
were quick to dither about indecisively! Many dice rolls later we added up the victory
point to give Kelly a well-deserved minor victory. Not only that but the yellow skinks
didnt run away.
A quick break for lunch was then taken. I would like to thank the people who manned the
kitchen throughout the tournament for there dedication to ensuring the event was a
success. All wargamers have a bit of halfling in them and can eat their own body weight in
unhealthy snacks.
My next opponent was a man called Gareth (there were several at the tournament) who had
brought some naughty Dark Elves with him. Unfortunately he had forgotten to make
sufficient sacrifices to the dice god and subsequently rolled very high for nearly all his
key leadership tests. A solid victory was forthcoming for the Bretonnians.
In the last game of the day I faced Toad, who had a Chaos Daemon army. His domination of
the magic phase managed to evaporate most of my force, leaving just some longbowmen to
deny him a table quarter. A massacre to Toad.
With that the clearing up began. Then the prize giving took place, the overall winner was
Andy from Gobstyks. Full results are available, Im sure, elsewhere on the Gobstyks
web site.
I arrived home at 10:30 pm, tired but happy after a very enjoyable day of Warhammer
Fantasy Battle.
I would recommend future tournaments run by the Gobstyks as they do an excellent job of
it. Thank you, Kelly, for providing the driving force for this tournament. Oh yes, and
when I got home there was a parking space in front of my house (cue Lou Reed and the song
Perfect Day).
