Project Brief

Create a table full of Mordheim buildings for a participation game at the October 2000 GW Openday at Lenton!
(Yes, I know this article has been a year in the making, but hey it's here now, Will)

Materials

  • Foam-core for walls
  • Balsawood for timbering & floors
  • Card for tiles
  • MDF for bases
  • PVA glue
  • Hot glue gun
  • Small jig-saw
  • Small circular-saw
  • Steel rulers
  • Craft knife

Method

Take two bearded gamers,

add some MDF board & Foam-core.
Cut the MDF board into smaller sections, depending on how big you want you buildings. We did ours about A5 size, some a bit bigger some a bit smaller.

Cut the Foam-core into wall sections.

Start with a long strip of Foam-core the height of the wall you want, ours were about 8cm tall. Then where you want the wall to turn cut nearly all the way through the Foam-Core so you can fold it, ie cut one side of the card & all the way through the "Core" but not through the card on the other side.

Glue the wall onto the MDF base.

Add Balsawood detailing for the beams & windows, we used two strips to create the corner beams rather than using a solid post. Use smaller strips to outline the windows, you did cut windows into the walls didn't you?!? One basic building, complete with door & window detail.

Add floors & more walls for higher buildings.

If you make the floor of the higher levels bigger than the walls below you get a nice tier effect. To get the effect of timber planks the Balsawood sheet was scored with a screwdriver using a steel ruler. When doing this go with the grain of the wood not against it!

You can even use old tubes for towers etc.

Sticking the stairs together was a knight-mare, but once dry looks cool. To strengthen this a coat of PVA covers the Balsawood steps. Glue card stones to the walls for added effect.

Add a Foam-core roof & tile with strips of card.

Snip the strips of card so they look like tiles. If you are wanting to fill several days with sticking down these tiles we recommend cutting all the way through the strips so you get individual tiles. If you don't have several days don't cut all the way through! Start at the bottom of the roof & overlay each level until you get to the top. Then create a top strip with no cuts & glue it over the top. Don't forget to do both side of the roof before sticking the top strip on!

Do this 9 or 10 times with different sizes & heights,

We made enough to fill a single table. Make one or two larger more impressive "center pieces" to act as mission locations, we have made a larger "Manor house" & a longer building over some stone arches (not shown).

You now have a Mordheim village ready to go.

All the building you see below we made in one day, there were 5 of us on & off during the day. We used one sheet of A1 Foam-card & several strips of Balsawood. Total cost about £10, that includes the two larger buildings.

Painting and Finishing

Paint your new buildings with textured paint. Spray black & dry-brush the walls, woodwork & tiles for effect.
